Polybutylene Piping
The year is 1978. Lead paint which was discovered to be hazardous decades earlier was finally banned by the federal government, copper piping would start declining during the 1990s, and at that point in time, polybutylene was the new best plumbing on the market which would be used in homes throughout the 1980s. Polybutylene was cheap, flexible, resistance of freezing, and easy to install; until it was discovered that it breaks down quickly and causes leaks, and manufacturing was stopped.
Yes, you say, but my home wasn't built until years after this point, so I'm not worried about it. Not so fast. Inspector Max has found what is referred to as “new old stock” or leftover stock that was used after the ban in 1995, in multiple homes, where a plumbing repair was once done after the home was originally built.
Did you know, that if even a little bit of polybutylene piping is found in your home, you may not be able to get flood insurance, or you may not be able to get any home insurance at all?
Florida’s Favorite Home Inspections will inspect for polybutylene piping during either a full home inspection or a 4-point insurance inspection, so you can be sure your home will not be subject to a leak from faulty plumbing.
